Wednesday Round Up

I'm really enjoying Thanksgiving week with my family here at home. It's great for everyone to have a whole week off of school so we can relax and catch up.

Yesterday we went to Walmart to pick up a couple things, and we stopped briefly in an aisle to look at something. As we stood there, an older gentleman walked up to Zach, looked at me, and asked him, "Is this your wife?"

"Yes," Zach said.

"Well, tell her she's done a good job staying in shape even after having two kids. It's nice to see in this ocean of obesity we have going on. It's clear you both take care of yourselves."

"Thanks," Zach said. "We work hard and that's important to us, so we appreciate you noticing."

What a nice, random comment from a complete stranger. It was like I finally got my gold star.

Zach and I are both Beachbody Coaches, and we have noticed that there are a lot of really successful coaches out there who have undergone major body transformations. We can't help but think that part of the reason they are so successful is because they can relate to the many people who have problems with their weight. They have fantastic "before" and "after" pictures and a great story of perseverance to go with it.

Zach and I, however, have always been in decent shape and have not battled weight issues. We skew toward "crazy dedicated," which can be hard to relate to.

We have joked that maybe Zach should gain a bunch of weight, then take it off again -- just to see if he could do it. Well, somebody else had that same idea, but actually pulled the trigger.

Meet Drew Manning of Fit2Fat2Fit.com. He's a personal trainer and lifelong fitness buff who wanted to understand his clients better, so six months ago he decided to "get fat" and then take six more months to "get fit."

Check out his site. It's a really interesting study, particularly the progression of his "fat" pictures. I plan on tuning in over the next six months to hear about the challenges he faces in taking the weight off again.

I busted out another food documentary last night! I really love these movies.

This was a fairly recent movie called "Forks Over Knives." Much like "Food Matters," FOK "examines the profound claim that most, if not all, of the degenerative diseases that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting animal-based and processed foods."

They follow two doctors who have spent decades researching cancer trends and completing studies with overweight, diabetic patients. It was very good, and made me feel very guilty for eating beef tacos for dinner last night.

Here's the trailer. The movie is available for download on iTunes and Netflix. Check it out if you get a chance! It will motivate you to eat a lot more vegetables.

Fresh on the heels of our Forks Over Knives viewing experience, Zach and I are going to have a brand new dining experience for lunch today: we're eating at a vegan diner in Dallas! The place is called The Spiral Diner, and based on the Yelp reviews and what friends say, it's adored by vegan and non-vegan alike.

I wanted the lunch location to be a secret, but I know how much Zach likes to research menus before he goes out. So I went ahead and told him where we were going, and the menu search was the polar opposite of what it usually is. Most locations have one or two things that he deems appropriate to eat, and sometimes he asks to substitute this or that, or leave off the sauce, etc. The Spiral Diner's menu was so chalk full of healthy options that he couldn't decide on what to have.

I'll let you know what we think of it!
